The 388th Operations Group, originally known as the 388th Bombardment Group, was activated in 1942 and trained in Utah and South Dakota until being sent into World War II during the summer of 1943. Like many Bombardment Groups serving in Europe at the time, the group’s job was to destroy important locations such as airfields and factories to weaken the enemy. Several of the BG’s missions bombing aircraft factories and oil refineries (especially around Germany) earned them 2 Distinguished Unit Citations. The group was also supportive during the Normandy and Saint-Lo invasions in 1944. Late in the summer of 1945, the group went back to the U.S. and deactivated. Just a few years later in 1953, however, it was brought back to serve at the newly constructed Etain-Rouvres Air Base in France. The purpose was to train in nuclear and non-nuclear air tactics. Though the group remained stationed in France, poor conditions for flying and training led a detachment to be set up at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, with squadrons rotating between the two countries. By the time these problems were settled, many of the airmen had reached the end of their tours and could go home which left the group weakened and hardly functioning. Unsurprisingly, the 388th was inactivated once again in 1957. In 1962, the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing was reactivated and sent to the new Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand to support the Vietnam War. In 1975, the wing flew several important missions, including helping to evacuate Americans from Cambodia and South Vietnam, as well as rescuing a ship that had been taken by the Khmer Rouge. During the 9-year period in Thailand, the TFW earned a Presidential Unit Citation and 8 Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards. After returning to the U.S. to Hill AFB, the 388th began working with F-16s and the new LANTIRN technology and became the first wing to use it during combat during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The wing and the Operations Group continue to deploy in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, among others, overseas.
